New exploration works on Vratza Limestone

The enterprise began geological surveying works to the north of village Staro Selo, Mezdra municipality, Vratza region. The aim of the survey is to evaluate the reserves in the area and if the results are favorable, a commercial discovery of dimension stone will be claimed. Vratza Limestone is a type of sedimentary rock exclusive to the Vratza and Mezdra territories in Bulgaria. An investor is Hemus-M, a holder of surveying license/permit. The area consists of sedimentary rocks of the Kailaka suite (Upper Cretaceous limestone). The rocks are represented by mauve to white, thick-layered and massive, organogenic limestone. The rocks contain shell fragments and well-preserved bryozoan, bivalves, brachiopods, gastropods and ammonites. Between them on certain levels are located massive, thick-layered limestone, labeled “quarry limestones”. The age of the suite is upper Maastricht. The limestones of Kailaka suite are covered by Eocene sediments, which are represented by sandstones and conglomerates, sometimes containing thin layers of allevrolites and clays.
